BOXING DAY MYTH

Many people wonder what December 26 is all about. There is an extra holiday that falls on the day after Christmas, known as Boxing Day. What is it exactly? According to history, this tradition started in England where churches opened their doors wide and donated alms to the local poor from their collection boxes. Also, servants and maids were allowed to take the day off and spend it with family after being busy waiting on the bosses on Christ’s birthday. Along with expanding their empire, the English spread their traditions to far lands – including the United States, Australia and New Zealand. So in case you were thinking that this is a special day to return unwanted gifts because of the “boxing” reference, you are dead wrong. It is more about extending joy for an additional day for the holidays.
